Factual issues

  • Line 64: “Richardson laid out a grid of 25 squares over a diamond-shaped region of Central Europe -from Denmark to Italy, from the English Channel to Poland -each roughly 200 kilometers on a side, stacked into five vertical layers.” – the canonical figures from Lynch’s reappraisal and Richardson’s own book are a grid of cells about 3° latitude × 200 km longitude (closer to 200 × 333 km, not square), with five vertical layers. “200 kilometers on a side” simplifies a non-square cell into a square; defensible for a popular post but technically imprecise. Suggested fix: “each roughly 200 kilometers across” (avoids the squareness implication) or leave as is and accept the simplification.

  • Line 64: “His actual computation focused on two columns near Munich: one for momentum, one for pressure, temperature, and humidity.” – The standard description (Lynch 2006, ch. 7) is that Richardson computed two adjacent columns (one for pressure-temperature-humidity and one for momentum/wind) over a small region encompassing southern Germany. “Near Munich” is a defensible shorthand. No fix needed, but if precision matters: “two adjacent columns over Bavaria, centred near Munich.”

  • Line 94: “1922, Cambridge University Press published it as Weather Prediction by Numerical Process -for the princely sum of 30 shillings. Only 750 copies were printed.” – The 30 shillings price and 750 copies print run are widely repeated in secondary sources (Lynch, Hayes 2001 American Scientist) and supported by the bibliographic record. No fix.

  • Line 94: “Still in print 30 years later, though.” – The 1922 first edition was effectively out of print by the 1930s. The well-known reprint is the 1965 Dover edition (republished by Cambridge UP in 2007). “Still in print 30 years later” (i.e., 1952) is dubious; the original print run of 750 was small and did not stay continuously stocked. Suggested fix: “Reissued by Dover in 1965, and by Cambridge UP again in 2007. The math ages well.” – this is more accurate and keeps the punchline.

  • Line 100: “Richardson predicted a pressure change of 145 hectopascals in six hours at a point near Munich.” – Lynch’s reappraisal gives the figure as approximately 145 hPa per six hours (some sources round to 146 hPa). 145 is acceptable.

  • Lines 102-108: “The actual pressure on May 20th, 1910, between 7 AM and 1 PM? / Nearly static. / 145 hPa. / That’s not a forecast. That’s a detonation.” – This passage is structurally ambiguous. The bare “145 hPa.” on line 106, sandwiched between “Nearly static” and “That’s not a forecast,” reads ambiguously: a hurried reader could interpret the line as “the actual pressure was 145 hPa” (which would be physical nonsense; surface pressure is ~1013 hPa). Suggested fix: replace line 106 with something like “Richardson’s forecast: 145 hPa.” or “Richardson’s predicted change: 145 hPa.” – which keeps the rhetorical contrast but eliminates the ambiguity.

  • Line 122: “He died in 1953, one year before the first operational NWP forecasts began.” – This is the standard claim. The first operational NWP forecasts began in May 1955 (US Joint Numerical Weather Prediction Unit) or December 1954 (Sweden’s BESK on real-time data). Richardson died on 30 September 1953. So “one year before” is slightly off: it’s 14 months (Sweden) to ~20 months (US) before. “Just over a year before the first operational NWP forecasts began” or “about a year before” is more defensible. Suggested fix: “He died in 1953, just over a year before the first operational NWP forecast began.”

  • Line 130: “his 1917 pencil-on-hay calculation produced a reasonable, skillful forecast.” – The correct year for the bulk of the calculation is 1916-1918 (he worked on it during his FAU service, 1916-1919). The 1917 date may stem from confusion with the lost-manuscript timeline (Battle of Champagne, April 1917). Lynch typically dates the calculation as having been completed by the time the manuscript was lost in 1917, but it was actually a multi-year effort. “His pencil-on-hay calculation” without a year, or “his 1916-1918 calculation,” would be more accurate. Suggested fix: “his pencil-on-hay calculation produced…”

  • Line 172: “He spent the rest of his career applying mathematics to peace research” – Slight overclaim. From 1920-1929 Richardson was Head of Physics at Westminster Training College; 1929-1940 Principal at Paisley Technical College. His peace research was done alongside his teaching/administrative work, not as a paid full-time pursuit. Suggested fix: “He spent the rest of his life applying mathematics to peace research” (life, not career) – or “He spent his remaining decades…”

  • Line 172: “Portugal and Spain couldn’t agree on their shared border length -987 km vs 1,214 km” – The “1,214 km” contains a comma thousands-separator; the user’s convention says no comma thousands separators. Suggested fix: “1214 km” (no comma).

  • Line 182: “0.54 TFLOPS of double-precision arithmetic” – 0.54 is the user’s own cluster benchmark (this is autobiographical). Not flagged.

Language issues

  • Line 14 (image caption): “The actual tabular calculation for the forecast of May 20th, 1910, 7h G.M.T.” – “G.M.T.” with periods is an outdated style; modern is “GMT”. Minor.

  • Line 110: “If you’ve ever had a code compile successfully only to produce output that is cosmically wrong -you know this feeling. I certainly do. (Recall: GeoBOTTOM, thirteen hours longer, and I had a computer.)” – This works. Self-aware, grounded, punchy.

  • Line 142: “the most extraordinary vision in the history of computing, written decades before computers existed” – “Most extraordinary” is a superlative that is hard to defend (more extraordinary than Babbage’s Analytical Engine? Lovelace’s notes?). Suggested fix: “one of the most extraordinary visions…” or “an extraordinary vision in the history of computing, written decades before computers existed.”

  • Line 188: “He was wrong about the number. He was right about everything else.” – Excellent punchy closer to the section. Keep.

  • Line 192: “Next time GeoTOP gives me a runtime that insults my ancestors…” – “Next time” in autobiographical voice (the user’s own cluster) is fine; this is not a forward-looking-series promise.

Forward-looking / self-disavowed framing

  • None identified. The post stands on its own. The closing autobiographical “Next time” reference is to the user’s own debugging, not to a future post.

  • Line 35 (verse): The Richardson rhyme as quoted – “Big whirls have little whirls / that feed on their velocity, / and little whirls have lesser whirls, / and so on to viscosity.” – The Richardson research file’s full version is “…and so on to viscosity – in the molecular sense.” The post truncates the closing tag “– in the molecular sense” which is a defensible editorial choice for punchiness; the four-line version is the most-quoted form. No fix needed, but the user should be aware that the canonical Richardson text has the extra coda.

  • Line 43: “Wind fluctuations at different heights seemed to depend on two competing forces” – Richardson’s 1920 paper extended observations and theory; the wording “Wind fluctuations at different heights” is loose.   • Line 61: “The key result - confirmed independently by Miles (1961) and Howard (1961) decades later - comes down to a single threshold” – Both Miles (1961, J. Fluid Mech. 10) and Howard (1961, J. Fluid Mech. 10) proved the Miles-Howard theorem, which gives Ri > 1/4 as a sufficient (not necessary) condition for stability in inviscid stratified shear flow. The post’s framing (“Below 0.25, things get violent”) is not strictly correct as a statement of the theorem – Ri < 0.25 is necessary for instability but not sufficient.   • Line 92: “Richardson’s equation ‘dramatizes the relationship between wind and heat.’” attributed to Giles Foden in Turbulence. – Footnoted to [^3] = Berreby. The Berreby Nautilus piece does mention Foden and the novel; the exact “dramatizes the relationship between wind and heat” phrasing should be in Berreby. The phrasing reads as quoted-from-Berreby rather than directly verified from Foden. Acceptable as written, but if the user has not personally verified the quote in Foden’s novel, the citation should be tied to Berreby (“as Berreby paraphrased Foden…”).   • Line 104: “that Bjerknes - the same man whose published observations Richardson used for his 1910 forecast on the pile of hay” – Slight imprecision. Richardson used observations published in Bjerknes & Sandstrom (1910), Dynamic Meteorology and Hydrography Vol. I: Statics, which collated observations from a 20 May 1910 international atmospheric sounding programme. So Bjerknes was indeed the publisher of the data Richardson used – but the data itself was collected by an international observing campaign, not by Bjerknes alone. “Whose published observations” is technically correct but glosses over the collaborative provenance. Acceptable as written.

  • Line 106: “His most cited paper to this day - ‘Atmospheric Diffusion’ (1926), with over a thousand citations - was work he had already completed before the realization.” – The 1926 paper is “Atmospheric diffusion shown on a distance-neighbour graph” (Proc. Roy. Soc. A, vol. 110). It is widely cited. The “over a thousand citations” claim is plausible (Google Scholar: ~3000+ citations as of recent counts). However, the claim that this was “work he had already completed before the realization” sits uneasily with Richardson destroying his unpublished diffusion findings around 1920. The 1926 paper was a continuation of his diffusion work; so Richardson did not burn everything related to diffusion – only the unpublished, more militarily applicable parts.   • Line 158: “Richardson found that for each tenfold increase in severity, the frequency of conflicts decreased by somewhat less than a factor of three.” – This corresponds to a power-law slope of approximately -log(3)/log(10) ≈ -0.48 to -0.5, which matches Richardson’s findings as reported in Berreby 2014 and modern reanalyses (Cedar & Clauset 2018 give a range of slopes). Acceptable.

  • Line 44: “The first office was, quite literally, in the attic of the Bjerknes family home (Encyclopedia.com).” – This claim appears in Encyclopedia.com’s article on the Bergen School of Dynamic Meteorology. The Eliassen 1995 NAS memoir and Friedman 1989 Appropriating the Weather (the standard scholarly history) describe the early Bergen Geophysical Institute as being “in cramped temporary quarters” in Bergen, including rooms in the Bjerknes family home. The “attic” specifically is a colorful detail repeated in popular sources. Petzold was a German doctoral student under Vilhelm at Leipzig, sent to the front and killed at Verdun in 1916. Jacob took over the convergence-lines project in 1916, when he was 18 (he turned 19 on 2 November 1916). Verified via Jacob_Bjerknes.md (citing Eliassen 1995, p. 5).

  • Line 52: “In February 1919, Jacob published an eight-page paper that would change meteorology forever: ‘On the Structure of Moving Cyclones’ (Bjerknes, 1919). He was 21 years old.” – The paper was published 1 February 1919, in Geofysiske Publikasjoner I(2), eight pages. Jacob Bjerknes was born 2 November 1897, so on 1 February 1919 he was 21 years and 3 months old. The post’s “He was 21 years old” is correct. Verified.

  • Line 63: “The hemispheric boundary between polar and tropical air became the polar front. The process of a cold front catching a warm front became occlusion, discovered by their Swedish colleague Tor Bergeron.” – Bergeron’s discovery of occlusion is dated to autumn 1919 (Bergeron.md), with the formal incorporation into the Bjerknes-Solberg 1922 polar-front paper. Bergeron was indeed Swedish. Verified.

  • Line 65: “Bergeron himself had a knack for observing nature. During the winter of 1922, while walking through the woods, he noticed that on days when the temperature was below freezing, the stratus cloud deck covering the hillside stopped at the top of the tree canopy instead of extending to the ground.” – Wikipedia’s Wegener-Bergeron-Findeisen article confirms the “winter of 1922” and “walking through the woods” framing. The Bergeron.md research file gives a more specific location: “while staying at a health resort at Voksenkollen (430 m above sea level), a hill north of Oslo.” The two descriptions are compatible: he was staying at the Voksenkollen sanatorium (which is on a wooded hillside) and made the observation during walks. The post’s “walking through the woods” is verifiable but loses the specific Voksenkollen location. Acceptable as written; could be enriched with “near Oslo at Voksenkollen, a wooded hillside often shrouded in fog” if the user wants the precision.

Carl-Gustaf Rossby passes through” – Bergeron arrived 1919; Solberg started in Kristiania in 1918 then moved to Bergen 1919; Rossby joined 20 June 1919. The “July 1918” framing two paragraphs above (line 73) is slightly anachronistic for these arrivals – they came in 1919, not 1918. But the passage reads as scene-setting rather than literal-July-1918, and the names of arriving figures span the 1917-1923 period. The framing works as evocative shorthand but is technically loose. Suggested fix (light): change line 73’s “It is July 1918” to “Picture the setup. The war is still on…” – this dispenses with a literal date that the named arrivals don’t all match.

  • Line 75: “Sverre Petterssen comes too - he would eventually formalize frontogenesis mathematically…” – Petterssen joined the Bergen School in 1923, six years after the institute’s founding and four years after the early “attic” period. Listing him in the same scene as Bergeron, Solberg, and Rossby compresses time considerably. The phrasing “comes too” reads like a parallel arrival; in fact he came significantly later. Suggested fix: “Sverre Petterssen would arrive in 1923” – gives the temporal context.

  • Line 75: “a function we’ll meet in Part 3” – This is a forward-looking phrase, BUT the three posts are explicitly framed as a trilogy (“Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3” – see the title). Per the user’s no-forward-promises rule (corrected after the Arakawa post on 2026-04-22), this should ideally be cut. However, since the trilogy structure is announced in the title and the parts are intended as a coherent unit, internal cross-references within the trilogy are arguably necessary for navigation.
