IMAGES — Post 49 “The Attack of the Killer Micros”

Image research for the MPP-vs-vector transition post (killer micros, MPI, spectral-transform parallelisation).

All images below were licence-verified on their Wikimedia Commons file pages. Six were downloaded to /home/michal/repos/michalbrennek.github.io/assets/images/. Two desired diagrams (domain-decomposition / halo-exchange, and a TOP500 architecture-share chart) were NOT found freely licensed on Commons — see the “Not found / to create” section.

Post49_Intel_Paragon_ORNL_header.jpg — landscape, public domain, an actual 1994 MPP machine.

The Intel Paragon XP-S-150 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (1994). A real distributed-memory massively-parallel machine of the killer-micros era (i860 microprocessors in a 2-D mesh), photographed as a wide machine-hall row — public domain (US Government / DOE work), so no attribution obligation and safe to crop for a teaser.

Notes:

  • Two Cray T3E photos were downloaded deliberately: the higher-resolution Wichary shot as the primary T3E image, and the Warsaw museum shot as an optional Polish-reader tie-in. Use either or both.
  • The Seymour Cray shot doubles as a vector-era HUMAN portrait AND shows a Cray-1, reinforcing the “vector past” visual. The Cray Y-MP gives a cleaner landscape shared-memory-vector contrast if a machine (not a person) is wanted.

NOT FOUND FREELY LICENSED — writer should create these

  1. Domain-decomposition / halo-exchange diagram — no CC/PD Commons file found (Media Search for “domain decomposition halo”, “grid partitioning parallel processors” returned nothing usable). The relevant figures live in arXiv / ResearchGate papers under non-free terms. RECOMMENDATION: the writer should draw a simple original SVG (a grid partitioned into rectangular subdomains with one-cell halo rings and arrows for the message exchange) — original work, freely licensable, and pedagogically cleaner than any found image. The site’s main.scss already frames body images with a white background + 16px padding, so a transparent SVG diagram will render correctly.
  2. TOP500 architecture-share-over-time chart (MPP vs vector vs cluster vs SMP) — NOT present in Category:Graphs of TOP500 on Commons (that category has country / OS / processor-family / performance-development graphs, but no architecture-share graph). No freely licensed version located. RECOMMENDATION: either omit, or have the writer generate one from TOP500’s public statistics data (the numbers are freely available at top500.org/statistics) as an original chart.
